And would it be kosher to pit them in bidding wars against each other in hopes of gaining my charitable contribution?

"dh1977" is close and that may be the case in her area. Nationally the FOP and PBA are unions that represent police officers in collective bargaining with their employers. In some cases they may only represent a particular group of officers in a department, such as sergeants or lieutenants. They also administer charity organizations that benefit police officers. I've never heard of the Police Benevolent Society.

For those who want to give to police charities keep in mind the money doesn't go to officers themselves but is distributed to other charities such as the widows and families of slain police officers and to the police atheletic league. Both the FOP and PBA are worthy organizations and nearly all the money contributed goes to the charities. It doesn't matter which one you give to.

What are they bidding for? Do you expect something in return for a contribution? Other than a sticker to put on your car they have nothing to offer. If you feel pressured or uncomfortable about giving to a police charity or expect some favor in return then I suggest that you don't give anything.

The PBA (Patrolmen's Benevolent Association) is made up of patrolmen and other Officers and Detective not of supervisor status. The FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) is made up of supervisors and other high ranked command. Both are Police unions, and both do charity work. They both try to solicit donations, and are separate organizations. If you desire to donate to either organization, do not donate through the phone or mail solicitation. The marketing companies that solicit for them take very, very large chunks or your donations. Donate directly to the unions themselves. They support excellent programs such as the "Shop with a Cop" Christmas gift program and other children's and needy family charities.

They both want your money. The FOP is a union while the PBS is a charity. I wish they would both quit calling me. The police make more than I do. I should start my own charity....

They both have the word "police" in them, so my advice is to steer clear of both of them.
