Reformatting your hard disk will completely wipe it clean. Is that what you're asking?
If so use fdisk and then repartition it. You can do that with a dos startup disk. Basically you'll use the format command on the c: drive.
If you really just want to clean it up some, you can defrag the disk from Accessories - System Tools. Reformatting is rather drastic and requires that you reinstall the operating system.

If you have the orginal disk (assuming Windows), you can put that in and reboot, there will be a step-by-step to format the disk and reload windows.
If you just want to format it, you can use a floppy bootable disk and you can fdisk from there.

in case you have the setting up CD for residing house windows XP (and the setting up Key Code) then purely placed the CD on your CDpersistent and restart your laptop. The application will "walk you thru" formatting the disk, etc.

If you want to clean your hard drive for embarrassing reasons then go and download drive scrubber from iolo.com and depending on the size of the drive and how clean you want it, it could take a couple of days!
Or try a program called killdisk (google search killdisk) with this one you can try it and it does one sweep and covers the drive in zeros, pay for it and it'll do up 99 passes.
If you are very bovered by your drive, bin it and by a new one!
Good luck
