INRI is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDAEORVM, which translates to English as: "Jesus the Nazarene, the King of the Jews". It appears in the New Testament of the Christian Bible in the Gospels of Matthew (27:37), Mark (15:26); Luke (23:38), and John (19:19).
Many crucifixes and other depictions of the crucifixion include a stylized plaque or parchment, called a titulus or title, bearing the letters INRI, occasionally carved directly into the cross, and usually just above the figure of Jesus.
In the Gospel of John (19:19–20) the inscription is explained:
And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. (King James Version)

It means "Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum", which is Latin for "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews". This is the phrase Pilate had written on a board and fixed on the top of the cross Jesus was crucified on, according to some traditions in order to mock him and others because Pilate recognized Jesus as the Messiah. Remember that Jesus was executed for the capital crime of claiming to be king of the Jews, i.e., advocating rebellion and independence from the rule of Rome. Since then many depictions of Jesus on the cross include this in abbreviated form.

Martin B,
It's yet another way that Roman Catholics stray away from the scriptures in favor of their traditions. It clearly states in the scriptures themselves that that was not on the sign of the cross of Jesus.
Rather, it was this:
Luke 23:38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Jshua Nazaret, Rex Judorum
Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
(J's were carved as I's and pronounced as Y's. The carving thing was because it was hard to chissel curves. Hence why 'w' looks like two v's but is a double-u -- u's and v's were indistinguishable in roman chisel text.)

INRI stands for "Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum" which means King of Jewish which people written on cross who hanged Jesus Christ. It would written by them just because, "Jesus Christ" shows divine character which make him God. And people who hanged him, try to provoke him to show his divine power but how can one divine just for the shake of someone ego show his power that he possess and that what divine "Christ" did in his life. He is considered to be a son of God. But, in reality, he is the part of God incarnate in the Human form to teach the path of truth. But, how people perceive him today in the name of Christianity, you can anaylse better by experiencing it himself. Christianity is true when one take the path of Jesus Christ which is based on pure love and bliss which would be eternal and connect to divine and exhibits divinity. God bless you!
