The US Marines has actually been doing this, unofficially, since 1997.

Matter of fact, many of the training programs that are now coming to public light were first being brought around with 1st LAR, 1st Mar Div. Back then I thought that such a program would help with the training costs, since to get us to the field costs so much in gas, bullets, etc... But of course, nothing can and will replace real training, going out to the field and so on. But at the very least to get the basics done correctly, simulations, and doing FPS style training might help to reinforce the actual field training.

Saves ammo, saves money. The programs they use are designed to simulate weapons kick, accuracy, wind/elevation factors, even rate of weapons failure. Bonus: no fatal training accidents.

And think about it this way, some of the new weapons systems in the vehicles they have are operated by nothing more than a view screen and what could be a playstation controller. Takes the first-hand observation out of the picture, but if the gunner doesn't have to stick his head up out of the vehicle to shoot at those who are shooting at him, he's less likely to get hurt or killed.

My husband is combat MOS. Makes sense to me.

Every body in a tank, plane, helicopter, ship, fighting vehicle, etc uses simulations to get used to the environment, etc.

In a simulation, you can throw more things at a person than you can in field training. You can link them together into a group, etc. This helps them with communication, threat recognition, battlefield survey, etc.

Police also use simulators for situation training. It helps a lot when in split-second decision-making real-life events.

I think that the cash is badly running out.

With the current expenses in the war, soon the GI's would be asking Russia, India or China for financial and logistical support to training.

The mariens have been researching this for years.. I belive it was a modified version of the doom engine that could link 24 players into it to practice squad tactics.. it was set up realisticially in some respects.. normal battlefields, one hit and you are out of action etc etc

it works to some degree, teaches you cover, ammo conservation, communication with teammates but they dont learn the consequences of getting hit, weapons malfunctions, bumping into each other in tight MOUT environments, but it does save a bit of hassle though. it is one thing to sit in front of a computer and click away, it is another to not sleep, carry freaking tons of gear on you, and having to take a town, thats when the NCOs, and other leaders start making their money, cuz nothing saids good morning like couple of great big automatic paintball machine guns, and guys with scooped out paintball rifles, at 0200.
