I've heard you should stop eating after 6:00 p.m. if you want to lose weight, but my new job is on the night shift and I don't know what to do.

Try to get some sort of milk based protein into you before you go to bed. Casein protein is a slow absorbing protein that takes approximately 7 hours for the body to take in. Getting a good dose of this (through a protein MILK shake) or some cottage cheese will help keep your body anabolic through the night. The people on here posting mean well, but they're repeating the same rhetoric that has gotten this country fat. Educate yourself, there is a plethora of information out there. Start here....

I usually don't eat anything for about three hours before bed. Thats around 7:30-8pm though.

The problem may be that your body can't keep up with your night shift job. Your metabolism naturally slows at night when you are "supposed" to be sleeping. This may be why you can't lose weight. Just try eating light and healthier in general. No chips or doughnuts! And especially no fast food!

There are several schools of thought on this. Most commonly I hear that one should stop eating after dinner. However, I am on weight watchers and have been managing my food intake to allow for a small snack later in the evening which is completely within the parameters of the weight watchers program. This allows me to go to bed without been super hungry. So far I have lost 60 lbs doing it.

Since you are working the night shift, you will need to set your own food schedule without regard to day and night. You will be active in the overnight hours, therefore, to your body that will be the daytime.

The 6:00 thing is for people that go to bed at 10-11 at night. What time do you go to bed? Stop eating 4-5 hours before that.

Dr. Oz on Oprah said to stop eating 3 hours before going to sleep. I used to work 3rd shift and it is hard to stay away from junk food on that shift! Take healthy, protein filled foods with you for lunch. Caffeine may keep you awake for a while, but will also dehydrate you at the same time. Keep water close by.(Or if you are a carbonated drink junky, try Diet Rite. Sugar free, sodium free, and it comes in different flavors. Like water, with kick!)

one I hope your not planning on a crash diet, eat 5 small meals or you can keep the three-two. with a snack (5 carrots and water, or an apple to tie you over). Eat dinner by seven at night, and eat nothing after 8, if you are hungry have a glass (8 0z) of skim milk, or water. The key to losing weight is being a smart eater, watch for things with high sodium, and high calories.

You'll get mixed answers on this, but I read this in my Jenny Craig book yesterday. It doesn't matter when you eat, but what you eat and how much of it.

Assuming you eat just enough to cover your bodies daily energy demands, then if you starve all day and then eat right before bed, that means you've probably been drawing on fat stores during the day. And when your food digests and metabolizes at night, they will be replenished accordingly.

Conversely, if you eat everything at breakfast, your body will put the excess in fat stores, to be drawn off later in the day when it needs the energy.

I have always had the bad habit of eating before bedtime, unless I worked night shift....then I just couldn't eat at 8 AM when I arrived home...I just came home and crashed.

You have to develop your own life rhythm and not listen to too many others...the calories you consume, not necessarily when you consume them, are the cause of weight gain or loss of weight, plus excess of course.
