I think you need to pick a dog that you like because while a 2 year old can definitely learn to love a dog, she can't be expected to be responsible for the care of the dog in any way until she's older. Keep going to shelters until you find the right one - take your daughter with you so you can be more sure the dog even likes small children. Usually very small dogs and very small children don't mix very well. Look for a dog with a calm, stable temperament, not an unduly excitable dog which may be made nervous by a 2 year old and get nippy.

I got a lab mix with my 2 yr when I first got my dog when he was little. It was about 6 months old and it was great that they grew up together. I really like labs because they are very docile dog and just so friendly. And if you get a lab mix they turn out to be medium size dog very nice family dog and a good size not to little where it can get hurt by kids and not to big to overpower a child
I did not get a purebreed though I always get my pups from the pound to save a life instead of spending hundreds of dollars on one.
Mine was a lab / collie and one of the best dogs I ever had till he passed away this week .
I would stay away from poodles . Poodles are small but they get attached to one person very easliy usually the person that takes care of them and they can get sometimes aggresive towards children . My parents had a poodle when we was young and it was a mean little bugger. Just awesome to my mom but if us kids got around her she was get defensive .

A datchschund, they are small, very loyal and very dosile for a children...they have enough energy to keep up with the kid and they are lovey enough to want to lay down and snuggle.
OK, I can't help myself on this one....to whoever is below me on the answers, IT IS NOT TRHE DOG, IT IS THE OWNER......just because it is a "vicious breed" does not mean that the dog is bad, I grew up with a great dane, one of my best friends has a Pit Bull and 2 babies and that Pit Bull is the most loving and caring dog I have ever seen, alos the worst biggest sisy dog.....T-Bone (that is the dog's name) won't even get his feet wet and is just a big pansy....another example of you people misjudging breeds. My mom was attacked by a Poodle and it almost ripped her face off, all because the owners were mean to it......SO THEREFORE IT IS NOT THE DOG, BUT THE OWNER!!

Try a pug. I recommend going to a rescue facility. I have gotten three different pugs that way. My kids are 5 and 3 and all of the dogs have been great with them. They are sturdy enough to withstand the roughness of kids but they are gentle and love to play. The energy level matches very well.

i asked this question a while back (you can go to my profile and see the answers that i got) but i ended up getting a pit bull after ALOT of research into what dogs are good with people in general but kids mainly and i found that a pit bull is less likely to snap at your child than even a begle or retriever! now needless to say they are not for everyone but they really are a very good breed for families i have a son who is almost 10months old and he and my 4 month old male pit bull get along really really well i would recommend it to anyone who has the time to deal with them. you should do lots of research about the kind of dog that you plan to get read alot about their temperment and things like that it is very important when trying to decide on a dog.

it would bepend on you livin arrangement and the size of yard you have...different breeds need different amount of room to run and play....I love Brittany's. They are medium sized...and family friendly but they are a little hyper at times so they need a lot of room to run....beagles are good also. They are a smaller breed but still very tough and good with kids....
Check out the AKC website and just research some breeds...you should be able to find something that will work for you.

honestly the best dog for a kid is a shih-tzu..... they are the most easy going dog there is...... bishon frise is not recommened for kids they can get snappy as they age... this i know ive had one.... maltese are also a snappy breed and couldnt be bothered i have a 3 of them...but a shih-tzu can take a lot from a young kid and still love them and they are a tough breed.

it's not the size as much as the brreds temperament. Be sure to steer clear of hyper brreds (jack russells, ig's) Cockers are great for kids as well as boxers. Also Cavaliers are very sweet.

small isnt the best idea. small children can hurt small dogs and vice versa. little dogs and little children dont mix, small dogs dont have a lot of tolerance for pulling and tugging. go with a golden retriever or black lab.

Depends on your living arrangement and level of patience. Beagles are notoriously great with small kids. They tolerate being fallen on, pulled on, drawn on, etc., and don't nip. But they think with their noses and can be harder to house-train. Labs are easier to train, but can be a bit rough with smaller kids (on accident.) Shelties can be good, but are prone to nipping when their herding instinct kicks in, not the mention the yapping.
Also consider the "designer mutts" - particularly cockapoos from smaller breeds of poodles. Just be ready to have it groomed.
