You're aboslutely correct. They try to prove they're not violent and the pope is wrong by killing someone... What kind of twisted logic is that?

Because the Pope as a position is supposed to be an agent of peace, humility and love.
I believe he apologised, to pacify the hearts of those with an ulterior agenda... ie. to make him look bad and humiliate him. But the Pope showed much grace by being humble, just as Jesus did.
Jesus did no wrong either, and yet allowed himself to be crucified, tortured and humiliated. I doubt the present Pope will go that far, but he has already shown a lot of humane virtues that further enhances his qualities as the Pope... he practices what he preaches at least.
I think this world has had enough of preachers/clerics/priests who go around preaching peace and harmony but behave like total Godzillas. The pope is teaching humanity by setting a good example... coz in the end, if violence, strife and suffering is the result... how much does a spoonful of humble pie gonna cost him for the sake of ending violent hatred and anger?

It's not only the Pope, all politicians seem to do the same....pandering to Muslims and the like all of the time.....yet it's OK for them to threaten us with chants and banners saying they are going to kill someone or other, It's about time it all STOPPED or else there will be a mighty big backlash from the moderate people who have been putting up with this crap for too long now..........then all hell will break loose. So all of you people that keep threatening the rest of us...is that what you want? if so it may be coming.

Because some of them are like Wookies.
He did not actually cause offence, so therefore he did not actually apologise. However he did, through the actions of those that went mental, allow the world to see the horrible truth (the burning of Pope effigy's, the peaceful demand for blood and death, etc)

Here is a link to the English translation of the Pope's controversial speech: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/speeches/2006/september/documents/hf_ben-xvi_spe_20060912_university-regensburg_en.html
In my opinion, although what the Pope said was true, he said it in the wrong way to the wrong people.
If you are going to give a constructive criticism to your neighbor (Islam) then you should do it to his face not behind his back.
The Pope's speech used Islam as a bad example of "faith and reason" to a group of Catholics when he probably could have found a better bad example in Catholicism.
Therefore it is appropriate for the Pope to apologize.
With love in Christ.

The Pope DID NOT apologise for the comments that he made, he apologised that his comments were not understood and that they caused this unrest.
Don't be misled, the Pope knew what he was saying and chose his words very carefully.

His mistake was not to say what he said but to apologize to these barbarians. Because it is true, those non- civilized animals sure are violent, but they are hiding under a peaceful religion bullshit to blow up building and getting the weak minded to convert to their non-sense. I was happy to hear the pope speaking his mind.

Because he is the Pope and should not hold a biased opinion. My personal position is the same as yours, but as the Pope, he has responsibilities not to bash anyone. The apology was the right thing to do.
