Let's see if I can help. In America, we call what you call kindergarten "preschool." Children in America don't start kindergarten until they are 5 years old.

In traditional American preschool, usually they have different classes for different ages. They may have 10-2 year olds in a class, 12-3year olds, and 12-4 year olds.

Montessori started in Italy. Its founder, Maria Montessori, then taught the philosophy in America, then London, then India. It began to spread worldwide.

In Montessori classrooms, we do combine the ages. We combine preschoolers and kindergarteners, or 3 to 6 year olds. Many combine the ages for younger age groups. The theory to combining age groups is that the combined classroom is more true to how life works. Usually don’t have friends or work with people who are all your exact age, you are surrounded by a wide variety of age groups. In a Montessori classroom, the younger children have someone to look up to and guide them, where the older children have someone to lead and teach.

I have taught both traditional preschool and Montessori (Montessori for 11 years). I will never go back to traditional preschool. Montessori is amazing! I see so many differences between children who have gone through both. Children who go to a Montessori schools are more confident, orderly, focused, coordinated, and independent than children who have gone through traditional preschool. They are great problem solvers, adaptable, and learn to make decisions at an early age. Children who go through a Montessori program do very well in elementary school. Here are some comparisons of Montessori and traditional education. http://www.alexandermontessori.com/about...
