Why do we strive to have one without the other?

garyomega: I am not a Christian, but let me show you something that you missed in you bible:

Isaiah 45:5-7
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.

Even in your religion the 'god' character admits that both is needed for some reason.

It's human nature to never be satisfied. Man always wants to try something new as soon as boredom sets in.

Good and evil are judgements about things that are actually neutral. The perception of good and evil is a symptom of imbalance.
The nature of the Earth is equated with the force of darkness/evil. As a being on this planet we are of the of the dark, but as transcendental beings we are of the light. Many feel that we are imbalanced towards darkness, so they strive to bring in more light.

The idea was to integrate the two; not override one with the other. People just got confused and tried to define darkness and it became associated with bad things. The real trouble started when they attempted to abolish evil (Religion).

Light is the absence of darkness. Evil is the absence of good. Light and darkness are both attributes of the same physical laws, but good and evil are matters of spirit and belief, and do not require the proofs of scientific methods of testing and repeatable results. 'Good' does not 'NEED' evil to exist, and Evil does not NEED good to exist.Of course most sane people would choose 'good' over evil as a way to help rather than hurt.
