Check Amazon.com or J&R if you don't mind buying online. Or visit a camera shop like Samy's camera. It's always goot to visit a local camera shop, since the folks there can be valuable resources for showing you how things work, or suggesting accesories later down the road. It also boosts your local economy :)

The Nikon D50 is the least expensive Digital SLR on the market at around $550 (body only) or $650 with lens. It's quality is equivalent to other cameras costing up to $200 more. For people spending closer to $800 there's a fierce competition between the Nikon D70 and Canon Digital Rebel XT and advocates for both sides argue lens quality, megapixels and features all night long. But since those are more expensive, the D50 remains undisputed champion in it's price range.

I'm very surprised that a photography class would require a digital SLR when manual film SLRs can be found for around $200. But I guess photojournalism needs the image right NOW :)

Look on craigslist.org for someone selling a used DSLR in your area.

Or, if you want a new camera, check the prices on a shopping site like Yahoo! Shopping.

Probably Best Buy or other major retail chain. I believe Nikkon has one for around $600.
