The low-cost carriers like Virgin, Jet Blue, etc may be able to do this but more likely you'll do better with an on-line booking service such as orbitz, travelocity or if you're adventurous, try priceline (very low costs but you buy 'blindly'. You don't know which carrier until you've completed the financial transaction)

A good travel agent (and no, I'm not a travel agent) is still worth their weight in gold because they keep track of the best deals, but now that airlines don't pay a commission, they pass the cost of their efforts to the customer, so expect to pay a ticket service fee. But they'll know about travel and fare restrictions, refunds, exchanges, etc, which are sometimes like weaving your way through a maze.

I work in the travel industry and would not rely on the best deal coming directly from the airline anymore.

Bon voyage!

I think sometimes you can, but you can't rely on it.

If a passenger doesn't show up to claim his or her seat, the airline will sell the ticket to a person showing up at the last minute.

I haven't really heard of any substancial discount when this happens. the problem being is that most flights are overbooked and if someone does not show up, there are others waiting for the seat.
