Probably Cracker Jacks! They have been around forever. the surprises inside have gotten skimpy and there are hardly any peanuts inside the box with the popcorn. Now, its like a surprise! if you find any peanuts inside.

Amaretta is right. We didn't have a big junk food culture in in the 1940's like we do now. If children did snack it was probably some type of bread or fruit. They also ate candy and desserts, but not as often.

There was a war going on and things were in short supply.
Also because most of the men we over there fighting and dying we probably didn't do extravagances here in the US and certainly not in London. It would be demoralizing to the troops knowing you were here pigging out and they were eating a cold K or C ration in a fox hole.
Also salaries were low and thing were expensive. Women were in the work force because men were in Europe. You probably made $35 a week back then and rent on a room or house was $40 there was food, which was rationed, clothing, electricity and heat. Even a 25 or 35 cent movie was exensive and maybe you saw one once aweek if you were single or twice a month for a family.
As I kid the 5 cent snickers bar was too expensive for me. I was on a 25 cent budget so I went for the penny candies, Stirps of beads, wax tubes with flavored liquid, bubble gum You could buy a bag in 1959 for 25 cents, but that snickers was too rich for my blood!

Homemade treats of all kinds were very popular then.
Sugar was rationed during WWII, so candy was a rare treat and appreciated all the more. Recipes that "stretched" sugar such as popcorn balls were popular.
Homemade beverages such as lemonade or cocoa and "fountain drinks" as well as bottled soft drinks such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi and various fruit sodas were considered treats.
Popcorn and peanuts, American in origin, plentiful and cheap, were popular at movies, ballgames and entertaiments of all sorts.
Commercial snacks such as Cracker Jack were special-occasion treats -- the toy prizes inside Cracker Jack were a big part of its appeal.
Simple "penny" candies such as lemon drops and stick candy were favorites. Gum was a favorite too -- Wrigley's, Beeman's, Black Jack, Chiclets, Juicy Fruit and Doublemint were all best selling brands.
Animal crackers and graham crackers were popular also.
People really didn't snack as much then as we do now. They ate meals at the table and desserts after dinner, and not nearly so much in between meals. Meals were larger and more formal then, and so people were more likely to be "full" at the table.

for the mob or the average Joe ? mob the best of everything, average Joe, spam, hot dogs, lard sandwich's all depend what kind of money the people had, remember most folks were poor and or in the army, and all army food was powered eggs, powered meats, and water so you had to be a politician, or the mob samething, to eat good , ice cream but then again you need money and WWII was in full swing so it was not much of a menu, the best soft drinks were Knee High Grape & Orange Crush & Coca-Cola

I remember Cracker Jacks, but you saw them more often at the Circus when it came to town. During WW2 all snacks made with heavily rationed sugar were hard to come by. Double Bubble Gum and Hershey bars were a favorite when you could find them. My grandfather could buy wholesale through his business so we were somewhat spoiled. He took the whole family ,every Sunday afternoon to treat us all to a new treat on the market, chocolate covered ice cream on a stick.
