Is there anything one could do to avoid this from happening? So that, for example, others wouldn't notice you were sleeping.

Whilst breathing through our mouths we dry all the saliva in our mouths and all the mucus down to our lungs, including the stuff covering our vocal cords. Without lubrication, you get a hoarse voice. My advice, keep a bottle of water next to your bed at night and take a drink when you wake up through the night.

It caused by no water and constantly sucking air while you sleep. As you sleep, you swallow less. This makes your throat more dry since the natural mucus dries from the air flow. If you're wanting others to avoid knowing that you were asleep, I'd keep a glass of water by your bed. That is to say if these people you don't want to know that you were sleeping are calling you on the phone and not in the same room as you.

It could have something to do with the fact that when you wake up you haven't drunk anything for a while, and it's likely you sepnt much of your time breathing through your mouth. The answer is so plainly obvious I find it hard to believe you even asked this question, unless you were bored or did it as a joke/bit of fun in the pursuit of a stupid answer, like magical mouth-drying fairies or something.

Probably because you've bin snoring!!!

Not much you can do but have a drink in the morning for example lemon in hot water and then do some voice excercises to warm up. Singing in the shower is good......

while you breathe at night your voicebox drys out ,my advice is to drink a half glass of water flavered with lemon juice before bed and upon waking some hot tea with honey in the morning. You will be ready to sing on American Idol in no time.....

your voise is like that because your voice box has not been used. If you don't want others to know that you were sleeping then just don't talk to them until you have woken up all the way

probably has something to do with your vocal cords in your voice box or larynx. They are probably relaxed and need to talk to tune up in the morning....let the phone ring several times before answering, and sing while the phone is ringing...that will get your vocal cords in action.
