What a awful thing to happen. My prayers and thoughts go out to the parents of this child.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time this breed has done something of this nature. I wish I had simple solutions to these incidents. The thing is everyone has lost here, the parents of the child, the child, the dogs, and the owner of the dogs.
Having a big dog that was by the Germans as a guard dog and a dog of war is a huge responsibility. They are not an easy breed to train or to own. I feel that it would be a good idea if people who purchase these animals have a special permit and have to follow strict rules of conduct with these dogs, such as obedience training, socialization with children and other dogs, and of course a proper manner to house these animals so escapes do not occur. In other words, the owners need education and guidance, as well.
I personally would not like one as a pet, but I have seen many people who own them and love them. As far as a guard dog goes, they are ideal. If properly trained, a guard dog is used to hold the person, not kill them.
All that said...I hope more can be done to better the care takers of this breed.
Take Care

Oh gees. Why don't people understand that it's not the dogs it's the people? If people were responsible owners then this would never happen. And nearly all animals are capable of killing given the right situation. Did you hear about the Labrador in England that "mauled" her owner? What the news didn't bother to tell you is that her owner was drugged out and going to die, so her faithful Lab was digging and scratching frantically at her face to revive her. Had the dog not done this the women would have died. Instead of realizing this the idiot family had the dog killed AGAINST the owners pleading. Have you ever heard of a show dog killing someone? NO because these are properly trained, and raised dogs. People start breeding bad temperaments in their back yard trying to get a meaner dog and you wonder why there are problems when some idiot buys the dog and raises it wrong.

I am a firm believer that animals behave in a way that they trained. However, that is not to say that there aren't just bad seeds. My aunt had two rottweilers and they were the sweetest dogs you'd ever met. On the flip side, when I was younger, my parents had a friend over that had a toddler. Our little dog (cairn Terrier or Toto) must've been having a bad day and the toddler was pestering him a bit. The dog bit the little boy on the leg only breaking the skin. No stitches, no permanent damage.
It is sad and unfortunate that this happened. I think for more dangerous type breeds (or ones that have such bad reps), they should have to go under an evaluation similar to what humane societies do when deciding if a dog is able to be placed in a home and if it has an limits (no other dogs, cats, kids, ect.). It could be jst like a rabies shot. Dogs have to have them and have to show proof that they are fit to be in society.
All in all, I think people need to be more responsible with their pets and/or children if they will be around each other. If the dogs are stray, I think the animal control needs to step up their patrol. My neighborhood had tons of strays and we all petitioned to have the humane society and animal control come through to help keep the strays to a minimum. A dog down the street (family pet- not stray), attatcked someone else's cat that was an outdoor cat. This is an example of where I think training should be in play. The dog should be trained not to attack and the cats need to know their own yard (although I'm not sure if that's possible- they're very stubborn). I had a neighborhood outdoor cat scratch one of my dogs. It's just so hard to keep tabs on them at all times.

Any thing has the capability to kill and maul.
Remember all the terriers out there that everyone loves. JRT, Rat, boston (meanest little sh*ts) Even my beloved big fluff balls have the ability to kill.
Im also an advocate on not only a dog owner having their pet under control but where the h*ll are the parents when this is happening to their children.
A few years ago a neighbors dog (pit) mauled a child next door to them. The parents went on the news and said" God was watching over her" The only thing I could state was at least someone was. I watched the 4 year old run all over the place without ever having any supervision.

I believe that it's not the dog, it's the owner. If you took care of your dog and trained it properly then the chances of attacks happening decrease. Of course there are always exceptions but I believe if your dogs well looked after then there should be no concern to what breed of dog you have. I have a bulldog and they look mean and people are very scared of him but he's very calm and he would never hurt a fly. I also took him to training classes and always have him on a leash when in public. That's my responsibility as a pet owner and I don't think people do invest enough time into their pets.

If you are going to use the logic of people shouldn't train their dogs in a certain way so that they wont bite people,,,,, just what do you propose that the police do with their Schutzhunds ???? How about the dogs trained by the military????? If a person is stupid enough to sneak into a business at night when it is protected by guard dogs,,, just what should that person expect to happen???? Expect the guard dog to walk up and lick the guys hand????
NOW,,,,, where were the child's parents, that allowed that child to get in to where the dogs were being contained ! ! ! It's my understanding that those dogs WERE NOT running loose.

I get tired of hearing its the dogs fault...they should all be destroyed....that is not true....the only thing wrong with those dogs was the owners....any breed of dogs is capable of being mean and hurting someone.....the bad thing is those dogs you named are the ones that people usually train for agression....bad people hear that and then they want a big mean dog....it is a lose lose situation for the dog....I do agree that if a dog attacks put it down...and punish the owners....but do not punish the whole breed to the actions of a couple bad owners....

but when you come down to it ANY animal that has teeth is capable of ripping a small child to bits...................and whilst I do not agree with you in principle about the selling it is OFTEN not dogs from a reputable breeder it is the 100's of unwanted breeding's that a lot of these dogs come from.
I have a pit bull and she is the most dopey bugger going, she thinks she is a lap dog BUT with that in mind I would NEVER leave her alone with a small child period.........why take the risk, as with ANY breed you NEVER know and it is too late to bleat afterwards but she has always been so nice / gentle etc.....
The nastiest bite I have ever had in fact the ONLY bite I have ever had was from a bloody terrier that was about twice the size of my hand but 23 stitches later.................
And I also agree with the statement posted above its NOT the dog but often the owner...................some dogs are more aggressive than others and for whatever reason some owners play on that trait................I dont think that my dog would bite a child BUT will never take the risk and OMG yes she is soft as muck BUT just you try to break in to my house and then whine about getting mauled.

Hmm, we might as well ban all dog breeds and just get over with! All dogs bite, and ALL have the capacity to kill. You can't blame a whole breed for the actions of a very small minority of them.

PUNISH THE DEED NOT THE BREED!!!!

I love all animals but even I have the sense not to get an animal I know I can't handle. It's the stupidity of some owners who think just becuase the dog is cute they have to have it and don't take into consideration what they need to know to properly handle the animal. That's another reason so many dogs are abandoned. Also they need to make sure they are spayed or neutered. That helps to calm them.
