When dieing they have Extreme Unction, then Penance, and Communion everyday. Other religions don't. What does that mean if a person is not practicing the Catholic faith? If they die, does God become unforgiving and send non-practicing Catholics to hell?

+ Sacraments +

Jesus Christ gave us the seven sacraments:
- Baptism
- Confirmation
- Eucharist
- Penance or Reconciliation
- Anointing of the Sick (used to be called Extreme Unction)
- Holy Orders
- Matrimony

A sacrament is a sign of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is given to us through the work of the Holy Spirit.

+ Rituals +

Rituals are all around us. Humans are ritualistic beings. We make rituals out of everything.

In our everyday lives, kissing your spouse hello and goodbye, prayers before meal and bed, celebrating holidays the "family" way, even doing your morning toilette. Rituals also give reassurance to children, adding a sense of confidence through repetition. Family members are brought together and bonds are strengthened.

Society has rituals: graduations, inaugurations, the Independence Day, New Years, Halloween, parades, the Olympics opening ceremonies.

Religion also has rituals, like baptism, marriage, and funerals.

This is the way humans live, celebrate and rejoice. This is also how we pass our values and traditions onto future generations.

+ Sin and Hell +

Not just any sin will send you straight to hell. Only mortal sins can do that.

Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.

A mortal sin is a grave infraction of the law of God that destroys the divine life in the soul of the sinner (sanctifying grace), constituting a turn away from God. For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be present: grave matter, full knowledge of the evil of the act, and full consent of the will.

Most of the sins we commit are venial sins. Venial sin is a sin which does not destroy the divine life in the soul, as does mortal sin, though it diminishes and wounds it. Venial sin is the failure to observe necessary moderation, in lesser matters of the moral law, or in grave matters acting without full knowledge or complete consent.

However consistent unrepentant venial sins can slowly destroy your relationship with God and become mortal sin.

People die all the time with venial sins on their conscience and they will go to heaven.

+ With love in Christ.

Dear tobeyp200,

The well meaning catholics have been deceived into following a works-grace gospel. The leaders of the cahtolic church have convinced their congregations that if they "do" what the church says, they will go to heaven. I suggest that you read Ephesians 2:8, 9 and Titus 3:5 because the Lord clearly tells us that you cannot do ANYTHING to earn salvation! And if catholics would read the Bible, they would soon find out that they are participating in practices that God never commanded and actually forbids!
For example, if you will read Matthew and Luke, you will see that Zaccharias was a PRIEST and was MARRIED to Elizabeth. They had a child called John the Baptist--He baptized Jesus in the Jordan. Why does the Catholic church have their priests unmarried today? Because they are practicing "rules" contrary to the Bible--that is why so many of these priests have molested children and engages in homosexuality. Read 1 Timothy 3 and you will see what God says about pastors, priests, deacons. "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death."

It's kind of like the navy seals. It weeds out the weaklings who are only in it for show. If you want to be a hard core, dyed in the wool Catholic you've got to go through all that Extreme Unction jazz.

There are seven sacraments
Baptism - to wash away Original Sin
Communion
Confirmation - entering into the church as an adult with a holy name
Confession - to cleanse the soul of sin
Marriage
Holy Orders - normally you only do one. Either marriage or Holy Orders
Last Rites - to prepare your soul to meet God

You go to mass once a week (minimum) to reconect with God.

No, I don't think non-Catholics go straight to Hell. God is far more loving and forgiving then that.

Spiritual power is real. Ritual creates spiritual power.
Jesus said the things He said to us are Spirit and LIFE.
We have spiritual defenses. When we take Holy Communion. The symbolic act of taking Christs blood, (personal spiritual
power), and His body, (unifying our Creators spiritual body),
into our body. We lower our spiritual defenses and allow the
Holy Spirit to enter in and do the work of Healing and Unifying.

Catholics and Protestants, you need to read your Bibles closely...

NO ONE ON THIS EARTH IS GUARANTEED TO GO TO HEAVEN JUST BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST OR BY GOD'S GRACE ALONE!

God's grace, alone, won't do it...

My faith, alone, won't do it...

How I live my life, by itself, won't do it...

I know that I can only get to heaven through Jesus. Also, it is not just by this faith in Jesus, nor just the Grace of God, nor just the works that I do. It is a combination of many things.

We receive God's saving and sanctifying grace in many ways, and Christ Himself, into our souls when we are baptized and through the sacraments. Yet we also know that Christ Himself has established certain conditions for entry into eternal happiness in Heaven.

"Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever."" (John 6:53-58)

We will be judged by this as well, so be warned...

"Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord. A person should examine himself, and so eat the bread and drink the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself." (1 Cor. 11:27-29).

We will also be judged by our faith, but not by this alone, we will also be judged by the works that we do (Justification by faith alone is a Protestant doctrine; it was unheard of in the Christian community before the sixteenth century.)...

If St. Paul meant that faith ruled out the necessity of good works for salvation, he would not have written:

". . . and if I should have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing." (1 Cor. 13:2).

If faith ruled out the necessity of good works for salvation, the Apostle James would not have written:

"Do you see that by works a man is justified; and not by faith only'? . . . For even as the body without the spirit is dead; so also faith without works is dead." (James 2:24-26).

If faith ruled out the necessity of good works for salvation, the Apostle Peter would not have written:

"Therefore, brothers, be all the more eager to make your call and election firm, for, in doing so, you will never stumble. For, in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you." (2 Peter 1:10-11).

If faith was the only necessity for salvation, the Apostle James would not have written:

"If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, his religion is vain. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world." (James 1:26-27)

Christ Himself stated:

"For the Son of man . . . will render to every man according to his works." (Matt. 16:27).

"‘Not everyone who says to me, "Lord, Lord," shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven’" (Matt. 7:21).

But, I need my faith as well...

"Who were those who rebelled when they heard? Was it not all those who came out of Egypt under Moses? With whom was he "provoked for forty years"? Was it not those who had sinned, whose corpses fell in the desert? And to whom did he "swear that they should not enter into his rest," if not to those who were disobedient? And we see that they could not enter for lack of faith."(Hebrews 3:16-19)

When I die, I will not enter the kingdom of Heaven immediately, either...

The Bible distinguishes between those who enter Heaven straightaway, calling them "the church of the firstborn" (Heb. 12:23), and those who enter after having undergone a purgation, calling them "the spirits of the just made perfect." (Heb. 12:23).

Christ Himself stated:

"Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court with him. Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny." (Matt. 5 :26).

And:

"I tell you, on the day of judgment people will render an account for every careless word they speak. By your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned." (Matt. 12:36-37).

" 'THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.' After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said to them, 'Hear and understand. It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.' " Mat 15:8-11

You decide....
