Is there any way to research family history online without any cost whatsoever? Any sites you could recommend my dads family which I'd like to research are from Ireland!

Hey Sezza,

You are getting some good advice. Once you get into your family history (genealogy), you may want to start spending money in the RIGHT places. But you have the right idea to start.

You should get everything you can from your parents first. Interview them for valuable clues. Here are some sites I like, sorry for repeating sites that others are giving.

Use GENFORUM to find your family SURNAMEs genealogy fourms, to talk to people doing similar research.

When you go to Cindy's list, do a search on IRISH. That will give you a filter on Irish sites.

Use puplic libraries in a town where you know someone died! Write to the librarian, or call them, and request an Obituary - that will be full of free information.

LDS FAMILYSEARCH.COM is really good information in all countries for your ancestors (not living). They have census, death, obit, and pedigree files. All free.

There are a ton of free genealogical sites on the web. Do a web search using your father's last name, Ireland, genealogy, and if possible the city or county of Ireland. If you don't get any hits, limit the search until you do. You might have to start with genealogy, Ireland or something else too broad for immediate use. As you gather info, you can refine your search to gather specific info; e.g., Dublin baptismal records, 1901, O'Reilly. You will get all kinds of data sources ranging from the paid to the amateur to the non-profit. Good luck.

Rootsweb and lds sites could be of help. Rootsweb has other researchers who have posted info on their families with email addresses to contact them. Plus, in their message board others have posted vital info such as obits and bible records. The lds site is the Latter Day Saints which has loads of info for the United States and other countries.
The usgenweb site is a state and county search, if you need it. All these sites are free.

I was going to post the sites dottie did (above). Also, you can actually search Ellis Island Records for family names and members that immigrated here back in the day! You can even see the actual page where their info was recorded and what boat they come over on. Very cool... good luck looking for your geneology. Be sure to scrapbook it and/or write it down for your children and grandchildren.

Look for genealogy links on local historical society websites where you live, or where members of your family have lived in the past. There is often a lot of information available there.

GenUKI & Free BMD - both come up first in Google - are specific for Ireland & Great britian. Since you are in favor of free data, tell the BMD people you are willing to transcribe for them.

Most kids just want to take. You seem willing to give back some. God bless you!

You are probably in the UK, since you use "Mum", but you might be a Canadian or Australian, considering the time you posted. Please edit your question to include a country. It makes a difference, and we can't tell from looking.
