Don't target more than about 2 lbs per week. If you try to lose faster, your body will go into "starvation mode" and get very stingy about burning calories while at the same time very efficient about storing any calories that you do provide. And it will make you feel awful.
There is no site specific way of losing fat... the old myth about working your abs to burn belly fat isn't true. To get rid of love handles, you need to lose overall fat. That happens with exercise and watching your diet. More on that below.
The most effective way to lose fat is aerobic exercise in the "moderate" fat-burning range, ideally first thing in the morning before you eat. When you wake your body is ready to burn fat and your levels of growth hormone are highest at that time. Later in the day it can take up to 30 minutes just to put your body into a fat-burning mode.
Another overlooked way to burn fat is by lifting weights. Skeletal muscle has very high caloric needs... almost twice that of adipose (fat) tissue. Put on a little muscle and you will burn calories all day even at rest. Be aware that skeletal muscle weighs more, so with this approach you may see your weight increasing while your body fat is melting away. Not realizing this often stresses folks who think they should be losing weight as a measure of fitness. Forget the scale, look in the mirror and you will be happy.
To lose a pound of fat, you need to eliminate about 3500 calories. You can do this by burning more with exercise or by modifying your diet to reduce intake. You can easily find a list of calories for various exercises by doing a Google search on something like "swimming calories." You can the lists to estimate how many calories you are burning up with your routine.
For diet, keep a diary for a couple of weeks counting calories, grams of protein, and grams of fat intake. It is easy with online sources of nutritional information (type the name of the food and calories into the Google search engine) and packaging labels. That will let you quickly figure out where the fat is coming from in your diet.
Fat gives you 9 calories per gram. So take the number of grams of fat, multiply by 9, then calculate what percentage the fat calories are of your total daily calories. Restricting the calories from fat to about 20% of your total intake is ideal for a maintenance diet... that isn't overly restrictive. Of note, you need some fat in your diet. For instance, the body uses fat to produce hormones. Once you have a picture of how to modify your diet, you can drop the diary and just go back to it occasionally if you are wanting to tweek things further.
There is a subset of questions that goes further and asks about "How to get a six-pack?" The answer is the same. Six-packs are 20% abdominal exercise and 80% diet. There is one caveat... abdominal muscles will form in the position that you exercise them, so be certain to pull them tightly toward your spine while doing crunches, etc. Also, during most lifting, the "core is active" which means that you should be stabilizing with contracted abs then too. Fail to do this and the abs will form, but bulging outward and the result is not attractive.
If you are trying to build muscle as a way to lose fat, then you may need to increase total calories and specifically your protein intake. I target about 0.8 g of protein per pound of body weight each day when actively building. That is far more protein than most people need in their diets.

I think the fastest way to lose 100 pounds would be to lose a fight with a big sharp saw. The safest way would be to eat right and exercise. You didn't gain 100 pounds in a month, so you can't lose it that fast either... You can lose it, though.
The good news is that people who are very overweight do lose weight faster than people who only have a few pounds to lose. The trick is to do it right. You may be too young to do a low-carb diet by the book, but you can modify it to assure that you are getting all the nutrients you need. Make sure that your carbs are coming from fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. If you are a soda drinker, stop, and avoid sugary desserts (cookies and candy, etc). Try to balance your carbs with proteins. Like, if you want toast for breakfast, eat whole-wheat toast and put peanut butter or an egg on it. If you are having rice at dinner, make sure to eat more chicken, fish, or beans than rice...
You also need to be active! When you lose a lot of weight, it's common for skin to get really loose and saggy looking. Exercising will help that not happen. As your muscles increase, they will pull the skin in towards them, so it won't just hang. Also, the more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolism will be and the more fat you will burn. Exercise will seem like a horrible chore at first, but as you get in better shape, it will become easier to do. You may even end up loving it... Try several things until you find a program, class, video, or routine that works for you. Make sure it is something you enjoy- like boxing or basketball- so you will WANT to do it...
Good luck, sweetie, if you need any more help, feel free to email me. ♥

My ideas? Try to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. Work hard, but don't over 60 minutes at a time. Do planks and other abs exercises on alternate days.
On training days, do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.
The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!
Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.
Read magazines like Shape, Womens Fitness, Fitness, etc to get tips and to stay motivated.
Good luck and stick at it. This plan has lost me 20 lbs in 12 weeks so far, just go for it!

Hey Charlie,
You don't want to go losing weight fast, because then when you get down to your goal, you'll just quit the diet and start eating, and gain it all over again. Sounds like a yo-yo, right? Definitely not healthy! The best thing is to change your eating habits. Here's a website that can help you. Just remember that you have to make a lifestyle change - get healthy and think healthy! Then everyone will wonder what you've been up to! Also surround yourself with positive friends that will help you keep going in the right direction.
Good luck, but don't think you'll lose it fast and keep it off!

lap band The idea behind the operation is to create a small pouch in the upper part of the stomach with a controlled and adjustable stoma, without stapling, thus limiting food intake. A gastric band device is introduced through tiny (1cm) incisions in the abdomen and is placed around the upper part of the stomach. The resulting pouch (or the "new stomach") dramatically reduces the functional capacity of the stomach. The band has a balloon from the inside that is adjustable and can reduce stoma size, thus prolonging the period of fullness. The operation is performed under general anesthesia and can last between 30 minutes and 1 hour. The Band is fitted around the uppermost part of the stomach, forming a 15cc small pouch. It is designed so that it can be inflated or deflated at any time after the operation. This helps the patient continually lose weight until they reach their goals. The restriction takes place in the radiology suite and normally takes 15 minutes. This simple procedure is painless. They inject saline into a port placed under the skin in the wall of the stomach. The tube that comes off of the band leads to the port. No cutting of the stomach - No stapling of the stomach - Calibrated pouch and stoma size - Can be adjusted to patient's needs after surgery with no operation to adjust the stoma - Laparoscopic removal possible - Fully reversible - Short hospital stay (does not exceed 48 hours)

There is no way of loosing that kind of weight quickly. Even if you didn't eat WHICH YOU SHOULDN'T DO, you will lose about 10 pounds in the first week then about 5 pounds per week after that. To lose 100 pounds will take about four months!
If you are really 100lbs over weight you need to go to you dietitian to get help and a councilor to find out how you managed to get 100lbs over weight in the first place.

well it depends if you are commited or just want to lose it for a party dress. if you are commited to stay 100lbs lighter you must incorporate 3things.
1.diet- eat more fiber and less carbs. fiber keeps you full and resist temptation to eat snacks.
2.exercise- it burns the calarie and tones muscle. measure yourself first and give yourself a time goal. 1month or more
3. motivation- partnering up with a friend or family helps you stay motivated and asking your family to support you. like no snack anywhere or replace with healthy ones like fruits and rice cakes.
if you want it the fast way but not maintaining your lighter self, here is some tips
not recommended.
don't drink too much water.
the apple fast- eat only apples for 3 days
let me know which you choose. the apple fast is a cleansing diet
good luck

Dude- 100 pounds is a lot of work. Please don't think it's going to come off overnight. Think more in the terms of months.
First, I would STRONGLY encourage you to talk to your doctor. If you are serious about losing the weight, they will point you in the right direction.
Second, as a person on their way to lose that much weight too, I would say that Weight Watchers is the healthiest way to lose weight and not feel dumb about the plan. And exercise daily.
Good luck to you, and I hope that you gain your goal... One weight loss buddy to another.
