It isn't WAV files you need for a cd player, but CDA (CD Audio). A cd player also needs specific header information for the tracks.
I've used Nero for this, but if you are having trouble, try using iTunes. By default it will take the recognized file formats (whether mp3, m4a, etc...) and convert them to CDA when it burns a disc. I've never had and iTunes disc fail to play on any player.

You can use mp3 format files to create an audio CD in Nero. Select the 12 songs you want and go to the "make audio CD" option. Nero will automatically convert your mp3 files to CD audio files.
Some CD players can't read burnt CDs. Try playing your CD in a couple CD players.

Convert them to .wma files. In Nero, choose make an audio CD it will automatically convert the files to .wma and should play in your CD player, if not, get a new CD player that will support burned disks, most of the new ones now do.

Along with the other answers, be aware that many CD players, especially protable units, do not play CD-R or other formats. Many that say they DO don't actually play all CD-R or CD-RW discs equally well.
After you re-burn it, try it on a few players to see if it works on any of them!
