What are the best neighborhoods within Brooklyn to live? We want a very "neighborhood feel" with lots of bars, restaurants, cafes, etc..also a safe place. And on the flip side, what areas of Brooklyn should we avoid?

Marine Park area is real nice as well as Bergen Beach and Mill Basin. Lots of restaurants, shopping and great parks too!

First of all, don't listen to the top response. You do not want to live in Bed-Stuy! Other neighborhoods to avoid would be Canarsie, Brownsville, Starett City, Bushwick... While these neighborhoods is starting to gentrify and be on the rise, they are still very dangerous, Bed-Stuy (also known as East New York) being one of the worst in the city. If you have money to spend, you would probably like Park Slope or Brooklyn Heights. Both neighborhoods are on the upper end of the scale in terms of costs, but they are amazing locations and very green (a big perk in this city!). One of my favorite neighborhoods is Bay Ridge. It is not an expensive neighborhood to live in and there are a ton of good restaurants, retail, bars, etc. If you are into the whole "hipster" scene, you might want to check out Williamsburg. It is very close to the city, but on the wholly unreliable "L" line of the subway. However, due to its hipster status, you will be paying through the nose to live there and there are still some pretty seedy parts of Williamsburg as well. I've heard good things about Greenpoint, in terms of cost and proximity to the city, but don't know much about it. Good luck with everything. I've lived here for three years (I live in Queens-Rockaway Beach) and moved from the West Coast. It's great living here, but I'm headed back to the left coast by year's end! You'll enjoy living here. It's an amazing experience! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Sounds to me like you are looking for Park Slope or Cobble Hill, if you can afford them. Or Carroll Gardens which is right next to Cobble Hill and used to be slightly less expensive when I lived there, but rents have gone up. Brooklyn Heights is even more pretty and even more expensive. Fort Greene I think has also become what you're looking for. ..that area around BAM, that's Fort Greene, right?...I had friends who lived in Windsor Terrace and it was what you're looking for.
