That's a two part question, even though you didn't know it.

When the crown was made, the gold could have cost about $50-60 or even more.

When YOU want to sell the crown, it is worth less. In order to find out how much the gold is worth, a refiner has to smelt and analyze the gold. There is a minimum charge for this of $20-25. This cuts the value of the gold down to about $20 for a typical crown. You can sometimes find a jeweler or pawn shop who will make an offer on a crown, which is usually about $20, because they collect them until they have a few ounces. It is worth their while to get them refined when they have a larger quantity, because the fees don't eat up all the value of the gold.

1. For a high content gold crown (precious crown), a maximum of USD$100 (about 35 British pounds?). This would be 22 carat.
2. For semiprecious crown (gold with other metals) about a third of that.
3. For nonprecious (no gold at all) it would be even less.
If your crown has no porcelain on it at all but only metal, then it is either precious or semi-precious.
However, if you're thinking of cashing it in, then a small amount like that is not of commercial value. It would cost the buyer more to assay it and determine the true alloy content than it would be worth.

The gold in a gold crown is very minimal, its mixed with all sorts of other cheap metals, so at a guess its probably about £10.00.
