my daughter has been given lactulose as she had an operation last week and they r trying to rule out constipation as a result of very bad stomach pains (she had an appendotomy), she had an enema last nite with no result . they have said if nothing happens she may need a scan to check her bowel ,does any 1 know how long lactulose takes to actually do something if its going to .

if you are in uk... dont wait for anything to happen..demand a scan now...nhs are rubbish..always start at the cheapest option!!!its your right to demand a scan to rule out anything more serious.. good luck

lactulose is a very gentle laxative. it may have no effect the first time of use. using it regularly should work but may give your daughter painful wind. it wont do her any harm though.

lactulose takes ages to do anything ,give her some prune juice,to drink
