The main methodological innovation of liberation theology is to do theology (i.e. speak of God) from the viewpoint of the economically poor and oppressed of the human community. According to Jon Sobrino, S.J., the poor are a privileged channel of God's grace. As I understand it, Liberation Theology has more to do with social action through political and military means to enforce adherence to doctrine than by strictly spiritual means. LT leads to a poisoning of the well, so to speak, in leading people to think that the only way to bring this world under God's rule is by human means, creating our own utopia of man-made laws that mirror God's laws. But since Jesus said that His kingdom was not of this world, those who embrace LT miss the point altogether. So if my understanding is correct, that's what Ratzinger/Benedict is waging war against LT.
