We don't have one at our house, but we have tried training him over there. We've gotten him to go through it, but we have to be right there, which defeats the purpose. He's always learned things quickly. What would be a reason he won't use it? He's there a lot, so it's not like it's unfamiliar. What can we do do get him to use it?
Thank You

Go out into the yard and start playing around. Leave him behind on the inside. If he doesn't come out on his own, try calling him. When he comes through on his own, tell him what a good boy he is and play with him for a few minutes. Then go back in the house, leaving him outside. If he doesn't come in on his own, call him. When he comes through the doggy door, tell him what a good boy he is, and reward him.

Then start all over again from the top, until he starts meeting you on the other side of the door, almost immediately. Then you give him a lot of praise and make a big deal about how GOOD he is to learn that new trick.

He should get the idea pretty quickly.

We have a doggy door into our garage and the same thing happened to us. Our dog wound NOT go threw it. What we did was my boyfriend went on one side of the door and I went on the other. We both had a pocket full of treats. We started with holding the door open and the person on the side with out the dog held a treat on the other side of the doggy door. Every time our dog even tried to get the treat or get half way into the door we gave him a treat. Even if the first few times you push him out the door yourself just make sure when he goes threw there's someone giving him a treat on the other side.
When it comes to a doggy door the main reason they don't go threw it is because they #1-have to put their head into a door-which their not use to #2-they don't know what's on the other side.
So if you keep trying him get him to go threw the door with giving him treats every time he goes threw for the first little bit. (you gotta practice a bit) Then you will find that your dog will go threw it. My dog full on runs at the door now to go threw and sometimes it's funny cause the other side will be closed. He's hit his head a few times. But good luck and just try it. It will work I promise!

Might be scared. Just keep doing it over and over. Make him watch the other dogs. He just might not be interested. My dogs were scared but now they love it. It took them about 3 months.
