he was just a mutt, a mixed breed, a tramp. Tramp means- a person who travels on foot from place to place, esp. a vagabond living on occasional jobs or gifts of food or money. and if you think about it, thats what he is

I think he was a Terrier mixed mutt, but the closest purebred he resembles is a Border Terrier: http://www.akc.org/breeds/border_terrier/
Or maybe a Schnauzer mix.

He was supposed to be a mutt, I believe, but he looks very much like a Standard Schnauzer, and his actions were similar, too!
