why do they use such common ingredients? I loved watching the original one because they always used something unique that i most likely had never heard of. Last night was battle eggplant for gods sake, I wish they would spice it up a bit. whats do you think?

I think the ingredients on the original Iron Chef were ordinary to Japanese, but weird and unheard of to Americans.

I kinda think it's cool that they are given cheese, green beans, or carrots and come up w/ 3-5 dishes with such a simple ingredient.

I agree, I think it can be a little lame and definitely isn't as adventurous as the original. But you also have to remember, while the original was extremely foreign to us, it is only "exotic" in Japan. Most of the items used are relatively well known there. It is nice to see unique uses for common ingredients here, but for the most part, it isn't very interesting to me.

I think the show wants to be more intuned with what the average american family have in their pantries, and they try not to be overly aggresive with what they cook on the show.
