If he gave you his number, I would call him (there is always the possibility he does not have text capability). Besides, calling would be more personal and you might set up a date or something!

Just call and tell him you were calling to say hi. Take it from there.
So long as you dont call him an hour after he gives it to you. At least wait a day.
