On cars the Generator was a DC output and used a voltage regulator. They can also be used as both a Starter and a Recharging unit. We had an old Riding Lawnmower like this. The Alternator is a AC output and uses a Diode Rectifier to convert the AC into DC, but, it is capable of a larger current output. That about all I can say in an easy way.

Genorators Create energy, where altenators can do many things. They can step it up (turn low energy levels into higher energy levels), or change it between Alternating and Direct current (AC and DC current respectivly), or help direct certain power levels get places (by putting out power at one stage for something, then putting out more or less for something else a split second later).

a generator is a gas powered engine that generates electricity; you would use it when your power at your home is out, or electricity is not available for your appliances. an alternator is what powers things like your lights, radio, and other functions in your vehicle after it is initially started by the battery....the alternator is also what charges your battery while the engine is running.
