The next semester, I will start a Master's course in England. Realistically, how much do I need to live on? I don't have extravagant tastes, but I do want clean, safe housing, and I like going out. I don't usually spend much on clothes.

Europe is expensive compared to America. The UK ranks right up there as one of the most expensive of all European countries, especially in London and the South East. The further North you go, generally speaking, the cheaper the cost of living, though most things are pricer than you would be used to at home. Public transport, taxis, petrol and running a car are more expensive than almost anywhere else in Europe, as are clothes, food, CDs, electrical items and almost anything else you can think of, and I doubt you would get much change out of £50 a week for a basic room somewhere, without accounting for electric bills etc, though if you can share with other students then this helps bring the costs down.

Most students end up funding their studies with a part-time job, typically at a pub or bar or at a local supermarket, most of whom have a high turnover of students going through their doors. You'd need at least £200 a week to live on I think outside of London, maybe twice as much inside.

well I know what your definition of ' going out ' is . To ' go out ' you will need twice as much as you need to go out in the us. The drinks in bars and pubs are twice the price as in the us. I remember a restaurant that cost 50 dollars for my meal and it was not french food or anything fancy like that. Only one helping of roast beef - I could eat as much vetegables as I wanted - a buffet with a cap on meat. Fish and Chips is cheap. Do your eating at home and have a pre session before going out - then it will cost much less in England.

I am living in the UK right now, and it is 2 to 1 against american money. Everything is pretty much double which makes it very expensive!! Just be prepared for the elevated cost!!! Good luck!
