Birds do need a male and a female to produce eggs that will develop into chicks, but like some of the other users have already commented, females will lay eggs sometimes if a male isn't around, they just won't be fertile.
Some females in species of animals (not just birds) are actually able to store the sperm from the male inside of them for lengths of time to delay fertilization so that either a) they can wait to have young until conditions are more favorable or b) so they can pick and choose the best father for their young. Maybe that's what they talked about on the show?

Are you saying that a female bird can reproduce without mating with a male ? I've been studying nature for many years, but that's a new one on me.
As for male birds sticking around, you have to take the different species. Some mate, then leave the rest up to the female. Some males feed both young and the females. Each specie has its own way of assuring the next generation. The species that are still around after so many thousands of years are doing it right, whatever their method.

What show said that birds don't mate?? The female needs a male to fertilize the eggs. Yes, she can still lay an egg without mating...but that egg will unviable or sterile. It taks BOTH egg and sperm to form an embryo. Birds mate by pressing their cloacas together...in something called a "cloacal kiss" at which time the male passes his sperm into the female.

to lay an egg that will hatch yes you need two birds, but if you want eggs that won't hatch get just a female (the female will defend the egg, to remove egg throw a towel lightly on top of female and grab the egg)
