Why do the Islamic people ignore the fact that Muhammad preached violence?

Question

Numerous text from history including text from the koran prove that Muhammad preached violence. What kind of God approves of violent ways. How can a people follow a religion that preaches such violence as strapping a bomb to their young child and sending the inocent child out to kill others. Why doesn't the parent strap the bomb to themselves? How can a loving parent do such a thing?

I don't think it can be justified and thus I shut my mind to such evil and forbid to see Islam as a religion. I see it as an evil in this world.

I agree and don't understand. As with the pope and his words and now they are proving once again how violent they are. When I say that I am generalizing, I'm sure they are not all violent

I am a practising Muslim (which is by the way the name given to "Islamic people"). I see you have already made up your mind about Islam as a religion but is that because you actually read the Quraan and found text that encourages people to be aggressive or violent? You say that there are texts from history and texts from the Quraan that prove that Mohammed preached about violence.
Well, take it from someone who has actually read the Quraan several times, there is NOTHING in the Quraan that urges Muslims to be violent. It only mentions the right of fighting back in retaliation of others aggression.
In fact the word Islam is the Arabic word for PEACE. Do you think many people would believe and convert to a religion which doesn't carry the meaning of its own name?
As for the children that are strapped with bombs, did you ever actually hear or see one of those kids carrying out a suicide attack?? And did you ever stop and wonder why their parents would have wanted to take pictures of them like that? Do you know that these images only exist in areas of the Middle East like Palestine where children have been killed in 10s in the daily Israeli massacres? And even though i hate the fact that these children are not actually enjoying their childhood and having pictures of them taken in school uniforms and while playing in parks don't you think these children want to look like that just to scare their enemies, the killers of their parents and friends away?
Please READ the Quraan and then see if you need to ask that question again.

I think you are very biased to say that a religion/god should not be accepting violence as a means to an end. This is partly because you are either Christian, or grew up in a christian influenced society. I'm from Europe, and my values and morals are very Christian, yet I do not believe in any god. My first impression regarding Muslim religion was the same as yours, but I did think about this before, thus changing my mind.

Statistically there were many more religions which preached violence as an acceptable tool then religions which banned violence. This is mainly because back in the days a society based on a religion which preached peace would have disappeared, and I'm sure many did.

So basically Christianity is a "luxury" religion. This religion developed in an environment where it was practical to be peaceful. An age where you can afford not hitting back, or not attacking preventively, or not attacking to strengthen your society. And my greatest proof for that is that this religion is still around.

Let me explain something to you.When Muhammad(saw) first became a prophet,the people of his hometown Mecca tortured him and his followers relentlessly.Even his own family.They used to do evil such as drag the Muslims on the scorching dessert sand,kill for no reason,banish the Muslims,stone the Muslims etc.All sorts of evil acts.
This went on for 13 years in Mecca.The Muslims not once raised their hands in retaliation or fought back because they weren't allowed to.Then finally they were able to migrate to Madinah.The Muslims lived in peace in Madinah until the Meccans came after them.It was after this Allah granted permission for the Muslims to fight back.
Now you tell me does Islam sound like such a violent religion.All the bombing your talking about is not of Islam.In fact a person who commits suicide in Islam will enter hell.ISLAM DOES NOT PREACH VIOLENCE.

As a Jewish atheist, I do not intend to enter the fray of this debate. It is much beyond my humble abilities to understand the logic of the Pope. But I cannot overlook one passage, which concerns me too, as an Israeli living near the fault-line of this "war of civilizations".
