There are several types of batons. The ASP baton it the most common you can also find a Winchester baton along with generic types. EBay, galls.com, or policequest.com carry them. I do not think that a baton would help you if you were going to get attacked because you would have to get it out of you bag and strike. If you try to hit your attacker and miss or just tap him/her the chances are you will just aggravate him/her more. Your best bet would be to get some Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) or Pepper spray. They have them where you can wear it around your wrist and have it ready to use. Pepper spray affects 99.9% of the population and us very affective in self defense.

The best defense againt an attack is to think ahead. Don't put yourself in a place where an attack might happen. Attackers prefer dark deserted places, so stay in well lit areas where there are lots of people. having just a few people with you will greatly reduce the risk. In the event you must cross a dangerous place, such as a city park at night, first consider taking the long way around or getting someone to walk you. Remove anything valuable that might attract attention, like jewelry, a handbag, or a camera and put them in a safe place. Also take off your high heels. Because running is usually all it takes to reach safety. Above all, be aware of your situation. Look all around you and keep moving. Attackers want to surprize you. Don't give them a chance to sneak up on you. I also don't recomend carrying a weapon. They usually do more harm than good. You'd do better taking a martial arts class.

What you are looking for is called an asp. I'm pretty sure you can not carry this as it would be considered a concealed weapon. I would consider a purchase of a Maglite. A 3 C cell would cause some harm if you used it to ward off an attack. Just remember that any type of defensive weapon can be taken away from you and used against you.

sure, plenty of telescopic batons. Try the Ebay, if you really want one.
IMO this is not a good idea, however. better buy a gun and learn how to use it (if it's legal) or move out of the neighbourhood.
Why?
Because unless you are trained to fight and have enough muscle to back it up, you will stand no chance against even a single experienced attacker
And never, ever carry a weapon in your bag- that is the first thing that you will lose in a fight

They're called expandable batons. Most common maker is ASP. You can probably get one off ebay, but beware - they're illegal for civillians to carry in most places.
Besides, if you're not trained in how to use one properly, you'll do yourself more harm than good. I know it seems like a stick is a stick is a stick, but believe me, there is proper technique and if you don't know it, you'll get it taken away and used on you. Also know that under many circumstances, using it is considered 'deadly force', so there are liability ramifications as well.

I think you're describing the ASP baton. I'm pretty sure there are versions that civilians may carry. You must be fully aware of when to use this intermediate level of force on someone, or you will certainly go to jail.

Expect to go to jail if you hit someone in the head or the center of one's chest with this baton.

the law might not allow you to carry a baton.

Try looking into a kubaton as an alternative.

Yes. It's a collapseable baton by Casco. I have one handy in my car until I get my CCH lisence. You might be better of with a Taser or good 'ol pepper spray.
