My kitten (4 months old) has the WORST gas quite frequently. We are sure she has some type of worm - as she is outdoors and eats mice daily. Since she is outdoors and there is no way to curb her rodent catching and eating (which she loves), is there any effective way to treat her worms? What type of worm do you suppose she has (tape/hook/round)? I've looked into getting Tape Worms Tabs, which are an over-the-counter form of Droncit, which is for tapeworm, or Erliworm, which are chewable tabs and treat roundworms. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!
Also - she is a very healthy and active kitten aside from the gas/worms. She eats normally and is a healthy weight.

The vet is your best bet. Tape worms are visible in the stool (they look like little rice grains), but the other types aren't and your kitty may have more than one parasite. You are correct that as an outdoor cat you are going to have a hard time keeping her free of parasites, etc. due to her rodent catching habit. If you cannot bring her indoors all the time, then you will likely have to plan on taking her frequently to get treatment by the vet....or let her suffer, which is cruel.
If money is an issue, you should look up a low-cost clinic in your area (internet or phone book search) and take her there. They offer vaccines and de-wormings, as well as spaying and neutering at a very low cost.

Go to a vet first so you will know for sure there isn't anything wrong. They can tell what would be best for the kitty. I found a stray that had gotten an infection from the mice it ate so it required some additional medication to make it all better. Plus you would not want to give your kitty any medicine that isn't treating the right thing could make things worse or make the kitty sick. Not all over the counter medications are safe.

Most worms will need to be treated by a vet but if you know for sure it is a tape worm { looks like rice when dry} You can feed your cat small amounts of fresh garlic. smash it up and put it in something she really likes. Tape worms are flea larve and yes rats and mice have fleas as mabe your kitty too. The only way to stop tape worms is to stop the fleas. The garlic must be fresh.

You have to identify the type of worm that she has and a vet needs to do that. When you know what is appropriate, and the proper dosage maybe you can go the "do-it-yourself" route and I still think it's dangerous. Mice are an excellent diet for a cat and I would always fear she would get a poisoned one. She will die from secondary poisoning if she does.
The drugs (they are poisons remember) are available because they are old medications which vets have found to be ineffective or harmful to your cat.
Are you planning to spay her yourself too?

you kitten shoulcnt be outside at all until she has been spayed....and is fully vaccinated
eating mice can make unvaccianted cats very sick since mice do carry diseases
for deworming the over the counter stuff ISNT full spectrum you need proper deworming from a veterinarian
her gas is probably because she is on a low quality food - any from grocery store or wal mart are low quality - too much filler, not enough nutrition
anyhow untill you get her spayed do not let her outside, infact really going out is terribly risky as outside cats lifespan is on average 2 years...

honestly, the best treatment is to take it to the vet for deworming. I just had to do this for my kitten. She had round worm. The de-wprming stuff that you can buy at the store is not very effective and is harsh on a cats body. Good luck!

get a stool sample and bring it to the vet to have it checked out.
there are also over the counter products at petsmart. dewormer tabs, tapeworm tabs. etc
go to petsmart.com and click on: Cat > Health Care > First Aid & Medications
there are a lot of dewormers available from liquids to pills

most over the counter things do not work you have to take your cat to the vet with a fresh sample if you can see the worms and they will tell you and prescribe medicine do not give your cat worm tabs chews drinks foods or any others until you consalt you vetrianarian it's not safe and may kill your cat.

My vet gave me a medication called Advantage Plus (I think.) It takes care of fleas, and worms. It's expensive but worth it. Ask your regular vet about that. It costs about 75 bucks for 6 (small) tubes and one tube equals to one dose. Good luck.
