Xanax is a sedative, anti-anxiety agent, can even make depression worse, so I'd leave the stuff alone if I were you. Xanax is highly addictive, and the withdrawal from it is not fun.
If you wish to try a holistic approach, St John's Wort (an herb) has been used for centuries in Europe to treat mild depression, you might pick some up at a supplement store and see if that lightens your outlook
The most important aspect of depression tho, is to not ignore it. Do whatever is necessary to treat it and rid yourself of the symptoms and side effects of depression or clinical depression. If the holistic approach doesn't work for you, and for some, it won't, then see a psychiatrist and explain your symptoms and see if he can't find a better therapeutic regime for you. Just do not give up on yourself.

I hate to say this, but medication may be the best option for you. I've been depressed for most of my life and I've taken antidepressants at different times. I was depression-free for about a year, but it came back recently with a vengeance. I've begun taking Effexor XR, and it's helped some, but I'm still feeling some of the symptoms.

If you don't exercise - start. The endorphins will begin to help you feel more like yourself. There is an herbal answer to your question which is called St. John'sWort. You will need to do a little research on this herbal supplement to get the correct dosage for your size. Also if you need to see a dr. & take an antibiotic make sure you tell your dr. if you are taking any vitamins/minerals/herbal supplements. Good Luck

if you don't want to be dependent on medication, try and address the cause of depression- if it can be corrected do so.
if the problem cant be solved or corrected and you still want no drugs, try acupuncture. it works in most cases.

It is better to take meds and live happily than not taking drugs and sad all your life. You have to consult a clinical psychiatrist. Do not self medicate.
