i bought a Chihuahua from a pet store in the mall and paid full price for a pure breed chihuahua. i have began doubting that he is a chihuhahua b/c he has gained up to 9 lbs. and a lot of his charateristics are not chihuahua. i was told by the vet that it is possible that he is a shiba inu mix. i don't want to make a big stiff about this if he is indeed a pure breed. please help.

You have learned a valuable lesson: Never buy a pet from a pet store! These dogs come from puppy mills whose only motive is profit, not the welfare, health, genetic problems or breed purity of the pups they bring into the world.

Complain to the Better Business Bureau, the attorney general's office, and the registry the dog has papers issued from - but most likely this will be CKC, APRI, or any other typical puppy mill registry - not AKC. This means they will probably not 'do' anything, as these registries primarily support these type of 'breeders'. Next time, go to www.akc.org & buy from a breeder that belongs to their breed's club. AKC is not just a registry, it supports dog shows & performance events to prove the dogs are good specimens of their breed. Good luck.

Breeders who supply pet stores do not pay attention to the standards. So even if your dog is purebred, it may not have the characteristics that breeders consider desireable in a chihuahua. Commercial breeders and backyard breeders only care that the dog is *purebred* (or at least registered), not whether it is a good specimen.

Hi i am a breeder and under the law of the ccc in Australia a breeder is NOT allowed to sell a pure breed dog at a pet shop thus when buyin a pet from these places you are more than likely going to get a cross breed but the will tell you its a pure breed, then you get a dog that you dont know what it is and they charge top prices for them , I get really upset with pet shops that do it.
they dont really know what it is just what the unregersted breeder tells them

Kind Regards Tess

I'm sorry to hear this but a chihuahua does not get over 6lbs. Please, never buy from a pet store they over price there animals and as you have found out they don't always sell what they advertise there animals to be. The pet store should have some type of refund on the puppy. Good Luck.

If it is a shibu inu mix then you are going to have an excellent dog. I know this is not what you want to hear because you want a purebred chihuahua. BUT, shibu's are excellent, loyal and friendly dogs. If you or anyone else out there wants a purebred dog by from a breeder that has the mother and the father on the premises !!! Good luck with your baby!!

Petstores buy their pets from puppy mills. It is highly possible that the mother was chihuahua but they neglected to state another breed got ahold of her while she was in heat. AKC papers are easy to forge. They take the owners word on who got whom pregnant. You have just as good a chance of finding a purebred in the shelter.
