Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against eating healthy and exercise. What makes me upset is people who start to go on a diet when they are already at a healthy weight. Many of my friends started doing this. They see people on tv, magazines, and the media in general wearing a size 0-3. That's fine, if you were born with a small body, but why try to be something you're not. It's not realistic or healthy! My friends are beautiful and none of them are bigger than a size 12. I just wish they would learn that you should love what's on the inside not the shell you leave behind.

My question would be: Why is America NOT obsessed with being skinny?

Seeing that 60 percent of Americans are obese, fat, gross-looking, why aren't all or most Americans trying to lose weight? If a few are worried about being skinny, that's the price we have to pay to get the majority of fat, gross, overweight people thinking skinny.

The obsession with so skinny is really a result of the same driving force for why we are the fattest nation on earth. It is the more is better philosophy. Whatever it is, people want more... more portions, more meat, more food. People eat to be full rather than just eating not to be hungry (there is a difference). The same goes with dieting, people get on that track of losing weight and think that more is better. For some reason, the US seems to have a major problem with moderation. Everything is always taken to one extreme or the other.

People just need to live life through a basis of moderation and they will be healthy.

I agree with you and the first answerer as well. I do think we are obsessed with weight to the point where that is all we see on magazines and TV. I also think there are problems with portion control in fast food places and what you prepare for yourself at home. We all need to learn that and then take it from there. I have an 11 yr. old. daughter who I am constantly telling to stop worrying about the size pants she wears, it is how she feels about herself that matters. If you are unhappy with your weight then do something about it but don't starve yourself to look a certain way. People are meant to be different.

It's mainly because or society mentally demands everyone to be skinny. NOT ALL SKINNY PEOPLE ARE HEALTHY, and not all overweight people are unhealthy. The media, magazines, hollywood TV and movie starts, they are all in competition with each other to get that dream part, and the public thinks that is the way you are supposed to look to get ahead. And it is usually consumed by the immature, young people, they are impressionable and the parents don't step in and tell them the way it should be, which is eat healthy and exercise regularly and your body will be what it is genetically supposed to be.

I'm a part of young America right now and i know the pressure. But Ive made a point of loving myself for me and my brains and my humor and my personality.... the only thing is that when i started menstruating i gained 10 lbs and started to feel less worthy of boyfriends and dating do i pulled away and gained another 5. I stopped the path and began eating healthy .... not for the boys or the friends but for ME. That's the difference.

It is all in the media. We are a fat country, but some people just try to be too skinny for the looks. They are blinded from the health risks as long as they look as good as the "famous". We are all blinded.

We are not really obsessed with being skinny. Besides the fashion, Entertainment & so called " heath" world we are the fatest country in the world. Also the women of this era has been brainwashed into insecurity. They obsess on their weight b/c they feel insecure with themselves. They need to learn to accept themselves for who they are and not what they weight.

The media, commercials, advertising, the fashon Industry, shows like Desperate housewives and a nation of women with twisted notions as to what is reality and what is fantasy.

Men being interested in pornogroghy... Hugh Heffner, Playboy, Hussler, Larry Flint... and the fact that a man can be as fat and discusting as he wants to and he will never be at a loss for stupid competitive women willing to fight over him, want him or not... just because someone else is interested, so are they.

Basically... It is because people are generally stupid, mindless idiots.

All of these are contributing factors...

Your friends probably don't have a positive self-image. We live in an age when most of the advertising we see is telling us that we "need" whatever they sell in order to be complete human beings. Diet is emphasized, and models are terribly thin. Unless a young woman has been taught that she's completely okay & is strong enough to BELIEVE it, their body image may suffer.

Media and fashion are the driving force behind our obsession with weight.
