They are as good as the camera's CCD size, in many ways. And that being 1440x1080 pixels you would be comparing the lower quality pictures from any decent compact camera not to mention SLRs.

That's below between a third and a half of the maximun resolution these cameras do nowadays, so that gives you an idea.

the two Canon and Sony have produced super camcorders and a few turkeys - you will desire to be specific. Are you asking that's the best AVCHD camcorder, the best Digital8 and so on, or that's the best format usual? If that's the latter you will desire to describe what you're doing - all of them have strengths and weaknesses (ok, DVD is undesirable and MicroMV grow to be an entire waste of area).

no offense, but go and get a freaking digital camera! if you can afford the sr1, a $200 (or heck even $100 or $50 ) digital camera will take better pictures than a camcorder (99% of the time) because they were designed to only take pictures. and same for camcorders. unless you have absolutely no time to pull out a digital camera for a picture, use the on-cam still image function. but for anything else (like group photos, etc.), use a digital camera and i think youll be fine with quality (compared to the camcorder). hope this helps!
