If you are willing to spend time hunting and watching a good first choice would be e-bay. You may get disappointed if you lose out but like me you can be lucky sometimes. Make sure you know what the item is worth and keep your head when bidding.

If you want contemporary modern pieces, go to the Biscuit Factory. I am a bit biased as my uncle, Mike Bell, is one of the artists there. there's loads to choose from and it's wise to invest in a few good pieces, as you probably know. (Mike's work is on page 19 of the artists-have a look, just for me!)

Ebay features a self representing artist category and you could browse original works and bid on them without having to spend much money. There are usually thousands to choose from.
