It depends on where are you planning on living. If your planning on living in the metro area or the major cities ( San Juan, Bayamon, Santurce , Caguas. Carolina,Rio piedras) then you will find those pretty much eveywhere. And yes they are to keep the thives away in most cases. You wont need a weapon to go to the market, malls and markets are pretty safe. its just common sense, dont go into dark alleys or places that you dont know your way around, dont stop on lights, as a matter of fact you dont have to stop on red light after midnight as long as you can go without hitting anybody ( its done to prevent carjackings). puerto Rico is a beautiful island, the food is great, you can find almost alll the stores you find in the states and is cheaper, i dont know if you have been there before, people there are really nice but they just do things differently and that its kind of a shock at first for non natives. Just pack a lot of patience with you and have fun.

It means that we rather avoid a problem than having one. It is very common to have bars around your yard or house and in the metro area even on the windows. Like someone said before it is to make it more difficult for thieves to go into your house. But don't let that scare you, it is very safe if you use common sense like in every other country. Puerto Rico is 100 miles long and 35 miles wide, it's a small island, you never can get far enough from bad neighborhoods. If you want to spend there your retirement I suggest any other area but the metro one. Try Rincon, Fajardo, Aguadilla, I think the west coast would be a great retirement place, more laid back than San Juan, you can find a house on the beach, great restaurants, developed but not hectic.

No, it is the same in most Latin countries - most of them have such a high poverty rate that with so many poor people come a lot of, well, low-level thievery. In Mexico most walls have jagged glass stuck in the tops, almost every home except wealthy ones all through Latin South America (Mexico all the way down to the southern tip of South America and all the Caribbean) have bars on the windows. Not for rootin', tootin' fireworks, but just to keep the poor, petty thieves out, more or less. There is about the same amount of total crime in PR as in any medium to large US city. No side arms needed i n PR nor here locally, either.

Bars let you keep the windows open with no fear of someone breaking in while you sleep at night or go to work in the day. . Many people don't have air conditioning and even if you did you don't leave it on all the time because electric rates are much much higher than on the mainland. If you live in Texas, run the AC, if in the Caribbean, put up bars.

There is bars on everything, all over the island, I'm from Canada so imagine my shock when I moved there for 9 months!! I found that living in Isla Verde I felt quite safe to walk around and go to the market. and going to the malls are safe also.

Its perfectly normal in hot countries to have bars at the doors and windows, rejas they are called in spanish. Means that you have the doors and windows open but the theives cannot come inside the home, but still have to be careful as they 'fish' for things like keyes and wallets literally with fishing rods or poles with hooks. I live in Spain, they all have them here and its odd not to!
To be honest, when I move back to the UK, I'd have the fitted there too

If you want to know about Puerto Rico just go and see it for yourself. I have being to a lots of places and every place is different and people have different opinions about it. If you plan to go to New York and you ask a person that was mug in N.Y. what you think he is going to tell you. So if you want to have an opinion about a place or person you tried it out yourself. Good luck.
