OK, so I've never taken it that far, but there are ways for them to check whether she's dead or not, so she's not really tricking them, just delaying. There could be some legal problems involved (fraud) I'm not sure. But beyond that, the companies can give her what's called a "charge off" on her credit report. I have one of these and it's the worst possible thing that can happen. It's basically a red flag that tells every company that you are not credit worthy. Your friend will never be able use credit again...or for a very long time...I only have one from when I was an immature college student, but now that I'm more financially responsible I can't get a loan for anything and everything I own on credit is in my husbands name. She should immediately get a free credit report (online from Equifax, Experion, or the other one) and see what the status is, and then contact a credit counselor...and tell her good luck!

It IS fraudulent. However, a company usually won't write off a debt until they receive a death certificate to prove that is the case. The credit history would be very poor if it was never paid. Avoidance doesn't solve the problem. Pay what is owed and that will....

If the agencies actually believe her, they will list the accounts as being closed and unpaid. As such, her credit will be negatively reflected. Also, if any of the collection accounts are large enough, she potentially faces fraud charges. Advise her to work out payment terms.

big mistake, they will show on their files you are dead, so the next time you apply for any type of credit or apply for a job one will have major problems correcting this.....if one is avoiding collectors, it is better to tell them that person has moved and you do not know them. it might work but the best thing to do is to pay if off Truth is better than lying

What an elegant solution!
A friend of mine once had his dad write a letter to one of those clubs that keep sending you books you never asked for saying that he was dead too.
But this is a little more drastic.
