I was 16 in 1963 and living in England so I can only answer for there. What a magical time. 1963 was the birth of 'The Sixties' (Yes I know we'd had two years already but they were a bit bland). Right then here's what I remember.

Girls.

Hairstyles were mostly 'The Beehive' or shoulder length with a curl up on the end (Very much like Sandy's in 'Grease'.) with lots of hair lacquer to keep it in place. Very few girls had short hair and the longer styles complemented the dress at the time, blouses and wide petticoat skirts. As the year progressed and Beatlemania began hairstyles began to get softer and the beehive was on it's way out with girls going for longer, straighter hair of a more natural look and lacquer began to be replaced with softer hairspray to give it more of a shine. If ever you see the Beatles film 'A Hard Days Night' you'll get the idea with the girls in that film, particularly Patti Boyd, who became George Harrison's wife for a time). The long styles were accompanied by either a fringe or middle parting. Very nice and sexy too. Girls in those days did not have tattoos or body piercing to deform their bodies either.

Boys

Again there was a vast change during the year. At the beginning on 1963 popular hairstyles were the Crew Cut (short and spiky and combed forward), the Semi-Crew Cut (short from forehead to middle of head then longer and combed back) and the style adopted by Elvis Presley and others of greased back hair with the front curl hanging down above the eyes. The back was either a 'square neck' where the hair was cut horizontally at ear level or 'Duck Tail' (Duck's A rse as we called it) where the hair was combed back along the side of the head and met in the middle of the back of the head and feathered together. All accompanied by sideburns, or sideboards as they were known in England. With the advent of the Beatles however everything changed and everyone, me included, changed to the new mop-top Beatle cut style. It was an amazing transformation and hair cream for the teenager went out of fashion overnight. Also boys started to grow their hair longer and in more simple styles. I remember seeing for the first time a guy with his hair over his collar. Shocking in those days, but within a year if your hair didn't cover your collar there was something wrong. We also saw the birth of 'Mods' and 'Rockers'. Mods wore very stylish clothes with hair back-combed and parted with a fringe across half the forehead and sprayed with hair lacquer to make it stand up. Rockers let their hair grow long and unkempt and rode motor bikes. I was a bit in between, a 'Mocker' I suppose.

Overall 1963 was a wonderful year. It saw the liberation of the young, the teenager, and the new music scene had just begun. What a great few years followed,. I'm so glad I grew up through the sixties, a most magical time and the best of my life.

The "Bubble" was very popular then. You had medium to short hair, ratted it by back-combing, and then carefully combed it into a round shape and sprayed it rock hard! That is after a night with rollers in it........
Skirts were full and knee-length and sweaters were in. Shoes were loafers or saddle loafers with bobby socks!

mini-skirts and teased hair. Bobbie soxs and moccasins. Silk colored scarfs for girls. The guys dressed like Elvis with side burns and DA hair. Blue Jeans and khaki pants. Both male and female wore large bulky sweaters with school letters on them.
And when the gal was going steady she wore his class ring on a chain around her neck.
