My husband says it depends on what you mean by gun.
It can be either the 9th century or the 13th century.

The firearm as we know it today evolved through the centuries. The first report of gunpowder was in 904 by Siui-Tung in China. Sometime in the 1300s gunpowder was used as a missile propellant. In 1326, the Council of Florence appointed people to make iron bullets and cannon. The English weren't far behind. The first written record of a hand gun, not like today's, is from 1388 English records.
Ignition systems and powder improved throughout the years. The self-contained cartridge of today was developed in the US, just before the Civil War, 1857. Smokeless poweder was invented in France about 1884. Smokeless powder was an advantage on the battlefield and in allowing smaller projectiles at much higher velocity.
Exactly who first put a ball inside a hollow tube with gun powder has been lost to history. As you can see from the dates, the use of cannon came during the early 1300s.

If you're talking inventor of the "modern" gun that we still use today, That would be Samuel Colt who patented the first ever five and six shot revolver in 1836. And later the patenting of the Colt semi-automatic pistol. Most notably the Colt 1911 .45 caliber.
