I have been golfing for many years, and I can tell you that amateurs should not be spending a lot of money on clubs. You can get great clubs at reasonable prices if you look into clones. Clones or "knockoffs" take the expensive pro models and duplicate them. The performance difference is almost undetectable for folks who do not golf very frequently.
Here is a great set (and site) - http://www.tourgolfclubs.com/viewProduct.cfm?ProdGroupID=143
Good luck ... golf is a great game!

Better get sneaky and ask him. Even golfers that only play a few times a year can have pretty emotional preferences. The next time an ad comes on TV or you see an ad in a magazine, ask him what the difference is about all the clubs and eventually ask him what brand he likes the best. If they are expensive, go to ebay or look for a traded in set at a local golf shop and make sure that they have new grips. Preferences for wood and irons can be different.

Stay away from large retailers (like Sports Authority or Dick's).
EBay is a great place to get NEW clubs cheap. If the doesn't play a lot, look for oversized iron help him hit the ball better.
Look at...
Cleveland Launcher LP ($250-300)
Taylormade OS ($275-325)
Taylormade r5 XL ($350s)
Nike NDS ($350s)

Your best bet is to get him to a pro shop that has a driving range let him try a few types and see what he prefers everybody has different preferences for clubs once he seems to like a set tell him they are too expensive and they will have to wait. Get home, get on eBay and pick them up for half price or less. Lynx Black Cat irons are very forgiving and you can pick them up on eBay for around £150 and they can cost anywhere between £299 and £499 in pro shops.
But be careful there are some fakes out there.

I ve always found Tommy Armor clubs to be a good mid-ranger. It depends on your boyfriends level of play. The better the player the more the club's generally cost.

I'd try ebay to find you some good TaylorMade or Ping brand clubs. *note to be careful, someone might be trying to sell fakes. Check their feedback and see what else they are selling*
