They are hoping someone of us who has read scripture for many years knows the best passage to use for their thing/party/event.
You can study the Word of God for years and not know all of it and only have a few parts of it committed to memory.

Maybe because they don't know where to find something. Maybe they read it once and can't remember. I have searched and searched for passages and can't find them. Usually I check out the concordance or Bible.com. But maybe they want some human input. Does it really bother you. You're asking questions, why can't they?

Lots of times they ask these question in order to expose non believers to scripture, so that they might get saved because the word of God is powerful.
