Younger people are also discriminated against because there are some older people who don't have the same level of qualifications or general knowledge who are in higher positions that younger people with a good level of education. Maybe everyone should have to reapply for their job after so long. Only the lazy would have most to fear from this.

Yes, but you can't TEACH someone experience...Sometimes qualifications are only part of the story. Many skills needed in the workplace come with practice and time. Younger people do not always respect that. Just as older people often mock the hard earned qualifications held by younger people by saying standards are dropping.

New laws HAVE been introduced to combat discrimination on the grounds of age for young and old alike. It is no longer to possible to advertise for someone with, for example, five years experience because it discriminates against 20 year olds.

Unfortunately no such laws have been introduced to rid the workplace of LAZY people. Age does not seem to discriminate in this case, I know old AND young people who are bone idle!

Yes I agree, and it is also the same for mothers wanting to return to work. I have lots of qualifications and experience but cannot get a job because I am a mother and a carer and have not worked for 4 years so I am considered outdated!!

It was explained to me like this, by an ex-employer.
Older people know how to work, they stick at their post good days and bad and get the job done.

They have experience and know how to treat customers.

Younger people will get the training and move on or leave to have babies!

So their thoughts were employ the over 30's they're more reliable.

Older people are afraid of losing their jobs 'cos they may not get another one because of their age. Therefore they are frightened of employing younger more qualified people in case they lose their jobs to them. It's a vicious circle.
