If you provide more information I think some positive answers can be made.
Is this a store purchased CD-ROM or is it one that you made yourself?
Store Purchased - Do you have any problems with other discs?
If you made it yourself, is it a (CD-R) or a (CD-RW)?
Older cd players do not read one or both.

According to the Dual manual , some cd-r's can be incompatible depending on media type and recording method .I had the same problem on a Sony unit .The way i worked out the problem is i only used Silver colored cd-r's and put a 10 second delay between tracks .Hope it helps .

Talk to the experts at Crutchfield they will sell you a unit that takes all kinds of data disks. Be aware that file format compression M-Peg 3 and 4 might be changed again. Every few years older units need to be changed out anyway. I just use MP-3 player imput and carry all my CD's on a 20 gig hard drive.

Try checking your manual if your unit can read CD-Rs, CD-Rws. Some brands and units have an anti- piracy protection system. Another cause would be your lens might be dirty already that is why it won't read even original copies of CDs. Have it check to a qualified technician. It can be cleaned and re-aligned.

The pause between songs sound like the software you use to burn them. Try changing the set up.

Are you sure it's a CD-R and not a CD-RW?

The RWs are the ones that don't can't play on all stereos unless you "close" them. You can also try burning fewer songs on them. Instread of ramming 80 mins, try just 65 or 70.

CDs and DVDs need different color lasers (drives that can read both, like the one in your computer, have 2 lasers). The drive in the car uses a laser for CDs and it can't see the reflective layer on a DVD (it's the wrong color). Copy the CD to another CD-R.
