As I have grown up I have accumulated layers of education, culture, custom and habit. They affect how I speak, how I dress, attitudes and preferences. As I trust God, The Holy Spirit strips away these layers of dross to reveal me, the true person inside.

one way of doing so is to cry for a vision, an ancient rite of my people, since you are not native, maybe try going somewhere isolated totally for 4 days and nights and only taking the barest of essentials for shelter with you and ask your hgher power to let you know yourself.
Mediate perhaps, study alternative means of finding the inner self

to thine own self be true. one needs to follow their own path to wisdom and knowledge then continue doing whatever they deem best within the laws rules and mores of the Culture and Society they reside in while respecting the rights of others even if they do not believe the same as yours for everyone has free will.

self reflection.
I had a meditation room in college (well the school had one made out). It had sound proof doors and there was no sound inside. It was quite beautiful. Had plenty of opportunities to self-reflect.

When you can define what you really like & dislike, what you value & what you do not. When you have friends who know you so well that you realise you know that they love you despite your shortcomings.
