It's good to have friends of different ages -- older people can give younger people some wise advice but you also want people close to you in age who are going through the same things you are.
Whatever their ages, you shouldn't allow any of them to influence you to do something you don't feel is right. If you're young, like 12 or 13 and have a friend who is 18, he might think it's cool to have you do the same things like drink, smoke, sleep around, etc. as he does.
There are some things that older friends might do that aren't appropriate for your age, and vice versa.

The older I get, the more I realize that age is just a number once you're an adult. If you're younger than 21, be careful about having friends older than yourself, but if you're over that age, you have a lot to learn from older people. Personally, I have friends of many ages. More older than younger, as they have more interesting experience, but there are some younger people who are very interesting.

Age is just a number. What really matters for you to be good friends with someone is the understanding between 2 people. I prefer older people to be friends with because they're more experienced and mature. They can help you with their advices.

I think that, that realy dosen't matter, but If you are a 13 year boy then it would not be correct to have a 30 some thing year old friend,,, if you are a teen them you should hang around your age remember that you are going to learn new things and you want to do it with friends your age,,,but if you are older then it dosent matter because they can teach you things and they can give you good advices

Having friends of any age is not a problem depending on your intellectual or emotional maturity. You can even cross generations such as having friends as old as your parents.
But for common interests and activities especially if you are still in school, then it would be preferable that your friends are your age group, such as classmates.
