though I do not know for certain what hindu's belive, as someone who has accepted the reality of reincarnation, I would expect they *PROBABLY* see this as occuring when someone clings to their recently former life in an unhealthy way, and fights moving on with the proper flow.

English word Myth comes from Sanskrit word "Mythya" which means false. Its blasphame to call Vedic literatures as Myths.

Yes Vedic literatures accept existence of Ghosts..
In Bhagavad Gita it is stated that
"Those who worship the demigods will take birth among the demigods; those who worship the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who worship ghosts and spirits will take birth among such beings; and those who worship Me will live with Me." BG 9.25

The Body are made of 5 gross elements and 3 subtle elements. when our body dies, the soul travels with the subtle body to another body according the karma.
This reincarnation is governed by Demigods or Devatas or servants of God. So if a person dies of a natural death. then before the death the next body is already destined.

But if some one chooses to kill one self, then the next body is not ready. The soul has to then live with only the subtle body. this existence is called Ghost.
Also in cases when the person is engaged in black mazic or exploiting other ghosts..then he himself has to become ghost to be exploited in same way...Law of Karma
In cases when the living entity is very sinful, he is denied another body as punishment and they also become ghosts.
In cases where the soul is very disturbed or very attached to the body, its not able to take up next body.
these are some of the main cases why the living entity does not get another body and has to live as ghosts.

Yes, it would seem as though Santa could not achieve his objectives even by quasi-conventional means. The error is that you rely on 'flying' reindeer hurdling through the stratosphere as would conventional aircraft. Let's then assume a more practical reality. Santa is capable of manipulating time and space. Instead of traveling the earth, he travels through dimensions. Which brings a darker aspect to Christmas. Namely, our naughty or nice behavior must occur in one dimension while the presents we receive occur in another. So technically, a new dimension is created each Christmas for us to receive our gifts.

The idea is that , those who die untimely for some reason, (Accident, murder, suicide...) remain stranded in forms of ghost before getting new body. Also sometimes when soul gets attached to that last body or to those it was supposed to be with , its unable to move on remains as ghost till it overcomes that "maya".
