Descendants of the Prophet PBUH are also known as "Ahl-ul-Bayt".
Prophet Muhammed's Daughter, Fatima and Hazrat Ali had two sons, Hassan and Hussain. Hazrat Ali was the first rightful Imam of the muslims. From him the bloodline continues.
Shias believe in 12 descendants (Imams) and from each Imam there's a bloodline by a name.
For eg:
Jafris : are the children of Imam Jaff-er-essadiq
Rizvi : are the children of Imam Reza (A.S.)

Direct descendents of the Prophet (pbuh) usually have Syed or Sharifah in front of their first names. Many of them can be found in regions like South East Asia (e.g. Malaysia, Indonesia) because back in history the Arabs would drive them away from their homelands as they did not want the Prophet's descendents to get any special treatment.
That's what I heard at least!

Taken from Wikipedia:
"Descendants of Muhammad are known by sharifs شريف (plural: ِأشراف Ashraaf) or sayyid. Many rulers and notables in Muslim countries, past and present, claim such descent, with various degrees of credibility, such as the Fatimid dynasty of North Africa, the Idrisids, and the current royal families of Jordan and Morocco. In various Muslim countries, there are societies that authenticate claims of descent; some societies are more credible than others."

yes there are ,have you ever heard about alashraf union ?
its aunion that seek to follow who are really related ( in blood) to prophet muhammed (pbuh)
they are not specific ppl ,there are so many in every country ( arabic ones) specially suadia ,jordan and egypt
but believe me they live like most ppl , sadly some of them arent even practise islam
it doesnt matter whether you are one of the descendants of prophet muhammed or not ? what really matters whether you follow and carefully apply his teaching or not , if you remeber prophet`s uncle was disbeliever so its not about being relative ,its about faith

Isn't that what the Sunnis and Shiites have been killing each other about for the last thousand or so years?
I really wish people would get past these dangerous superstitions.

i used to know someone who is from "Al-Hashim", a decendant. he's living in jordan, living a normal life.
the King Abdullah II of Jordan is supposedly a descendant, i think he's more like the son of "Abu-Lahab"!
