I think it's more the singers voice that makes that song sound odd. The Icelandic version's singer has a really beautiful voice which I think makes it better than the English version.

You know, I used to think German was the God awful worst sounding language.
Then, I met an American guy with a German wife. He spoke fluent German, but unlike most, he never picked up an accent. He would speak fluently but with a whitebread mid-west accent. Actually sounded fine, not too different from English. I also went to Munich once, and found the Bavarian accent almost pleasant. So it seems it's mostly the main German accent more than the language itself.
On a side note - Albanian, now that's a language that can't be saved :(p

Having lived outside Germany for quite some time, some German regional dialects now sound a little harsh to me. Overall it is a very precise language which offers lots of nuances and can be very lyrical.
No more cheesy than English though... might be biased.
I also believe the more languages you learn the more you get out of life.
